Practical Activity: Virtual DNA Transcription and Translation Simulation

Completion requirements
Opened: Tuesday, 20 May 2025, 12:00 AM
Due: Tuesday, 27 May 2025, 12:00 AM
Simulation Tool:

Transcribe and Translate a Gene – Learn Genetics, University of Utah

🔗 URL: https://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/basics/transcribe/

Instructions:

  1. Visit the simulation link above.

  2. Follow the step-by-step guide in the simulation:

    • Enter a DNA sequence.

    • Watch how it is transcribed into mRNA.

    • Observe the translation of mRNA into a protein (amino acid chain).

  3. Repeat the process with the following sample DNA sequence:

    T A C G A T G A C T G A A C C C T A G
  4. Record the results:

    • Transcribed mRNA sequence

    • Codons and their corresponding amino acids

    • Start and stop codons identified

Student Task:

Create a short lab report containing:

  • A screenshot of your simulation result (or drawing)

  • Your mRNA sequence

  • Amino acid sequence (translated protein)

  • 1–2 paragraphs explaining the biological significance of transcription and translation

Submission Guidelines:

  • Format: PDF or Word document

  • Upload To: LMS > Week 4 > Practical Activity: Virtual DNA Transcription and Translation Simulation
